Semi Psycho-analysis
of Hyde
(article by hidoko Matsumoto)
He is the sort who
doesn't want to talk about his own things, unless it is intellectual. When
he refused to disclose his birthdate, the leader of L'Arc (tetsu) had to
alleviate the atmosphere of the situation (which is,
er, not commercially wise). But at the same time he
likes to reveal the deeper stuff, especially his lyrics, and feelings.
Admittedly tetsu has the tendency to do the same thing, but in my opinion
hyde's motives in revealing these things are less pure.
But being an Aquarius
(from tabloids), he bears a lot of interesting concepts.
The more intellectual concepts began circulating in Roentgen, unlike
in L'Arc. In L'Arc, he seems to express more feelings than ideas. But in
Roentgen, it seeks to express the other side of a gentler and less
polluted feelings. It also seems that when he portrayed his intellectual
ideas in Roentgen, he had a tendency to separate it from emotions
(which is different from Suite November).
It also seems that
throughout the years he has been fascinated by the Gothic side, and lyrics
often have mythical tales embedded in them. The Gothic side chiefly refers
to British Gothic literature and the ideas that come along with it, such
as the uncanny, troglodytic Hyde in Jerkyll and Hyde, the decadence
of religious practitioners and or the religious implications with regards
to the uncanny and of human kind, and there's also the Neo-Goth Marilyn
Manson (oops. Goths are gonna kill me.) whom
Hyde likes. And well, if you really must push it,
Kamen Rider and Batman both wear their undies on the outside.
He himself has said
that it is easier to believe in the Devil than God, which suggests that
he is either atheist or agnostic. Generally speaking, it is hard to tell
whether he really is atheist, but he often speaks of God in his
lyrics. God in the lyrics imply a deity that is all governing and there
often is a strong tendency to rebel against it. In his lyrics, there also
is the concept of sin, and usually because it only speaks of one God, combined
with his fascination with Adam and Eve (dune period), angels (Angel's
Tale) and devils (et cetera...), I would assume that his influence
is (most generally speaking) Abramic.
An example I can
think of right now (coz I don't usually read lyrics unless I really like
the song) are Ibara no Namida, which conveys a strong sense of fate,
"is heaven taking joy in the prank it rained down upon us?" (*very*
loosely translated...) There always seems to be some
sort of prodigious feeling with regards to fate and the all governing power.
Also, in Shi no Hai and also Finale, the idea of God is always
viewed with a defiant attitude. Shout At The Devil is another interesting
piece-- as purity is not often associated with the Devil, unless he views
the Devil to be like Lucifer (before he fell) or to be God himself (which
is also possible).
Then there is the
usual word... LOVE. This is often the subject of his lyrics, usually imbued,
even in Heavenly, with sin and impossibility. It is often seen as
forbidden, which is also why from 1999 onwards, the immense blame and defiance
towards God is prevalent (ibara no namida, finale...). There is always
an androgynous quality towards the subject of love, and is extraordinarily
associated with gentility from 2000 onwards as compared to other periods...
(My inner voice begs to yell, "TETSU!" but er, that's not the point).
Anemone, the
last L'Arc song, for example, is imbued with very forbidden love, which
personifies the subject with its gentility and sweetness and yet distances
it so that the journey to reach it is never ending. (the
idea that it's written for his wife is basically just some possibility
conjured by the reviewers, it has nothing to do with what hyde wants to
convey, since he has never said it himself.) As such,
it is, as the other songs are, helpless in its own right despite the desire
to reach the goal (or own the desired object, which is the anemone) and
the beauty of the goal.
Even in gentility,
the androgynous quality is always there. One interesting point to note
is that the archangel Gabriel (Jibril), aka Lord of the Moon, bears the
quality of healing, emotions but is androgynous (as all angels are), and
his sacred flower is the white lily, which is also what Hyde painted with
his barbed wire in Shallow Sleep. And tetsu posed
beside white lily in LIFE... It's for tetsu! I'm sure of it! The androgynous
quality imbued with such gentility... how can it not be tetsu?
Okay... My brain
is fried. Wwwoooo. Basically that's about it. Everybody else knows the
usual stuff like he's read Harry Potter and all that, so I'm not gonna
talk about it. Goodnight.
